Are You Crazy?

The puzzled looks and stares of the Italians who interact with us clearly demonstrate how difficult it is for them to understand why someone would leave the United States to come and live in Italy.
The car sales man said, “Do you realize that we all want to go to the USA, and instead you came here?”
The waitress at the restaurant said, “Do you know how difficult it is to live here? I don’t understand!”
The agent showing us an apartment said, “I think you are crazy!”

Every person who questions us provides an open door for us to explain that we have come here to explain the Bible and to help people know God. When we explain this, the puzzled look does not go away, but they have varying responses. The waitress came back a few minutes later, apologizing for her insistence that it was unwise, and telling us that it was a noble decision. The car salesman changed the subject very quickly.

We know why we are here, we know that the need is immense, and that the people we encounter have no understanding of the Reason anyone would ever make this decision.

WE LOVE YOU!

These words resonate in our minds, as we rehearse our last few days in the USA. The days were hectic with many preparations, for moving to a different country presents its challenges. We are so grateful for the dinners, phone calls and emails we received, as we were preparing to leave. Certainly the highlight was our commissioning service. We were challenged by the message of our pastor, Jerry Wragg, and by the commissioning of the elders. As we stood there with Matt and Johanna Johnston, all of us with bittersweet emotions, we were overwhelmed by the love of God expressed through the care of our dear brothers and sisters in Christ.

The reception afterwards was filled with a steady stream of church family and friends, who wanted to hug us farewell and assure us of their prayers.

WE LEFT HOME!

Although both Loredana and I have spent most of our lives in Italy as believers, we know that our home is where our local church is. We certainly miss Grace Immanuel Bible Church! We know that as our sending church, the ties are great and their prayers are faithful. What a blessing to have all of our pastors, and many friends come at the airport to see us off! While we were trying hard to get our luggage and carry-ons passed through check-in, considering all the weight restrictions, what a great blessing it was, to have our church family alongside to encourage us.

WE NEED YOUR PRAYERS!

As we begin our life here, we certainly need your prayers. Bureaucratic  challenges, finding a home for both the Johnstons and us, opening bank accounts, buying vehicles, getting cell phones, getting used to the traffic – these are only some of the many tasks that we must deal with. And on the face of every person that we meet, there is that same puzzled look that says, “Why ever would you come here?”

FOR THE SAKE OF THE GOSPEL!

Dear friends, pray that we would never forget how precious the Gospel is in our own lives, and what a privilege we have in sharing it with others. No, we are NOT crazy!

OVERWHELMED

pdf down

We just returned from a wonderful three-week trip to visit friends and churches that are connected to our ministry in Italy.

We were overwhelmed by God’s clear providence in every destination. The Lord protected us, as we drove about 4,000 miles through the Midwest. We do not take for granted that we arrived at our destinations without problems, and that the logistics all went well.

We are overwhelmed by the love expressed by so many believers. We also do not take for granted the fact that so many people, some we do not even know well, are praying for us. We certainly realize that we do not deserve this kindness, and it’s all because of our wonderful connection through our Savior Jesus Christ.

[pullquote1 quotes=”true”]Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen. Ephesians 3:20-21[/pullquote1]

We are overwhelmed by the churches and individuals who have decided to support us financially. As we prepare to go, we are so grateful to God for the generosity of individual believers and churches. We are grateful for the anonymous friends who have given ministry gifts on our behalf. Our prayer is that God will encourage and bless spiritually all those who are making a commitment to the progress of the Gospel in Italy.

We are overwhelmed by the privilege of having a loving sending church. What a privilege it is to see how God has used the past two and a half years to bond our hearts with our wonderful home church. We have been so blessed, both by receiving spiritual nourishment, and by serving in different ways. We know that we will miss our close fellowship with so many friends. And yet, we are also looking forward to our commissioning service as missionaries to Italy on December 8th.

We are overwhelmed by the privilege of having a team to work with. We have so enjoyed having David’s father live with us for the past couple of months, and are grateful for the privilege to minister together in Rome with Bill Standridge. We are also grateful for the way the Lord is knitting our hearts with Matt and Johanna Johnston. We see our role of mentoring them, as they learn the culture and the language, to be a privilege.

We are overwhelmed by the need in Italy. We continue to see the great need for the Gospel in Italy. Rome, alone, has 5,000,000 inhabitants who are, for the most part, unreached. We look forward to reaching out, through our publishing ministry, to the 60,000,000 Italians. And meanwhile, we are asking God to help us reach out with the Gospel to those with whom we will have daily contact, as we live in Rome.

We are overwhelmed by the privilege of depending upon a sovereign, loving God. As we go through the logistics of packing and planning, we know that everything is in the hands of a meticulous and caring Father, Who is accompanying us every step of the way.

But, at the same time, we still need your specific prayers.

PLEASE PRAY THAT WE DO NOT GET OVERWHELMED BY ALL WE HAVE TO DO!

1 – For us, as we pack and plan our shipment to Italy
2 – For the remaining needed monthly support
3 – For our need to find an apartment when we get to Rome
4 – For Loredana’s citizenship process to be completed by the end of this month
5 – For our coworkers’ visas and packing

Thank you for your faithful prayers, your co-slaves for Christ,

David and Loredana

We Need for You to Pray!

We are so grateful that God is moving us forward. David just recently finished his last week with the company where he has worked for the past 18 months. God was very gracious in providing a job that supplied our needs, and that He used to mature us, as we learned to endure the rigors of full time work combined with ministry in the church.

David has also been able to present our seminar, ‘How to Witness to Roman Catholics’, in numerous churches, and we are so grateful for the positive response we have had to it.

We will now be able to concentrate on preparation for Italy. We will be traveling to various states, where we will be able to present our work to friends and churches. Our journey will take us to Tennessee, Kentucky, Indiana, Michigan, California, Ohio and more.

David is also looking forward to simultaneously translating into Italian the STRANGE FIRE CONFERENCE, organized by Grace to You in Los Angeles, CA.

[pullquote1 quotes=”true”]I thank my God in all my remembrance of you, …because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now. Philippians 1:3,5[/pullquote1]

We have purchased our tickets for Italy. Our elders have encouraged us to go ahead and purchase the tickets for Rome. Our plan is to leave from Miami for Rome on the 10th of December. As you can imagine, this action has really put us into motion! We need to decide what to leave behind and what to take, and we must pack. We need to hire a moving company, sell our vehicle, and get things set for our arrival in Italy.

Our leaving date has made us realize that we have to say good-bye to our beloved church family of Grace Immanuel Bible Church. David will be teaching our Bible study just a couple more times. Discipleship relationships are being passed on to other wonderful believers. We have been so blessed by the opportunities we have been given to minister and be ministered to, here in our local church. We eagerly look forward to our commissioning service on the 8th of December.

We realize that we depend totally on God. We are so grateful for the churches and individuals who have decided to partner with us. Many have joined our CORNELIUS CORPS prayer group and many have decided to support us financially. We have not reached 100% of our support yet, but we trust that you will pray with us that God will provide the $1,000 a month that is still needed.

So many things still need to be completed, and we are looking forward to the way God will put all the pieces together. Loredana has gone through all the paperwork to become a US citizen. We are just waiting for being called for the swearing-in ceremony. We need your prayers that it will come soon.

We are excited about the team God is putting together. Matt and Johanna Johnston have also purchased their tickets, planning to leave on the same flight we are. Bill Standridge will be returning to Italy at the end of November, and we look forward to joining him there to minister together. We know of several more couples who are planning to join us in the next few years, and are humbled by this exciting prospect.

Will you commit to pray?

  •   For the necessary preparations
  •   For the remaining needed finances
  •   For safety in travel
  •   For Loredana’s US citizenship
  •   For David’s translation of the Strange Fire Conference
  •   For our co-workers as they make their final preparations

Please feel free to write or call us in the next few weeks.

David and Loredana

A New Sense of Urgency

We just returned from Italy, where we went for the funeral of David’s mother. What a privilege it was, to rehearse the grace of God displayed in a life that served Him for over 60 years. Close to 300 people were present on Sunday afternoon in the church where Bill and Maria Teresa have served faithfully for so many years. We believe that heaven rejoiced, as one of God’s faithful servants came face to face with her Savior, and we, too, rejoiced in remembering the work that was accomplished over the years. Bill and his three sons, all missionaries in Italy, had the opportunity to speak. Different aspects of Maria Theresa’s ministry and life were remembered. Then a special challenge was given by her beloved husband, Bill, to all those present: Maria Teresa has finished her work on earth, but all of us who are left must carry on and serve God as faithfully and diligently as she did.

[pullquote1 quotes=”true”]Behold, now is the favorable time; behold, now is the day of salvation. 2 Corinthians 6:2b[/pullquote1]

There is still so much to do, for the work is not done! As we drove around the city of Rome, our hearts were impressed again by the vast numbers of people living there who have never heard the true Gospel. It is probable that very few have even read one page of the Bible. And so it is crucial that the publishing ministry established by Bill and Maria Teresa continue to produce evangelistic materials to reach these millions of lost people. The many edifying books and Bible correspondence courses need to continue to be distributed by Cornelius Ministries to all parts of Italy.

We were able to speak to many believers during our short stay in Rome. Their excitement was encouraging, when we explained our plans to return, God willing, in December to begin our full time ministry there in Rome. In the meantime, we continue to prepare for this exciting transition in our lives. Our pastor, Jerry Wragg, and the leadership of our Grace Immanuel Bible Church share in our sense of urgency for us to begin our ministry in Rome. David has given his 30-day notice to his employer in Jupiter. We are so grateful for the way God has used this job to provide financial support and to shape our hearts for ministry. The Bible study groups that David teaches are eager to see their burden for missions fulfilled in the ministry of Cornelius Ministries in Italy.

We are overwhelmed by the privilege of having wonderful coworkers. Bill, David’s dad will be moving in with us. We will have the privilege of serving together with him in Rome. But he will live with us in Florida for the next three months, while we continue to raise the necessary funds to go back to Italy. Our weekly meetings with Matt and Johanna Johnston continue to fuel our love for the ministry in Italy and our mutual gratitude to be ministering as a team, in a country where the work is very challenging.

We are humbled by our partners in the Gospel.  Dear friends, you are a vital part of our ministry in Italy. We know that as you pray, you support our eagerness to go back there. Many of you have already financially joined our support team, and for this we are very grateful. Before we actually can leave, it is necessary that we are sufficiently funded, to ensure our financial integrity while on the field. We are depending upon the Lord to bring, through His people, the remaining $ 2000 support per month. Some of you are possibly waiting for our departure, before beginning to support our ministry. If that is the case for you, please let us know, so that we will be able to make final arrangements for our desired year-end arrival in Italy. (We say all this with ‘Dv’ hearts. This is an abbreviation for ‘Deo volente’, Latin for ‘Lord willing’.)

We have some great opportunities coming up.  We are making plans right now, to travel in October, visiting friends and churches. If you would like to host a dessert get-together with your friends, or if you know of a church in your area where we could present our work, please do let us know. At present, we are planning to be driving through Michigan, Ohio, and Indiana. God has also opened an opportunity for David to do simultaneous translation into Italian, of the “Strange Fire Conference” at Grace Community Church in California. His role there will be a great help to the Italian believers, for they will be able to listen to the live-streamed conference right in their own homes. John MacArthur’s teaching will equip and edify these believers, who are often confused by the widespread charismatic movement in Italy.

Would you like to join our CORNELIUS CORPS? We continue to enroll the names of those fellow believers who share with us the same sense of urgency for the Gospel to be proclaimed in Italy. If you would like to make the commitment to regularly pray for and possibly even contribute to our monthly support as we minister in Italy, please let us know at dstandridge@corneliusministries.org. When we have your email address, we can also keep you updated about our ministry prayer requests.

We praise God for every one of you.
Your co-slaves in Christ,

David and Loredana

August 2013 News from Bill Standridge

SUNDAY, August 11, we celebrated Maria Teresa’s homegoing in our church in Rome,

with over 280 fellow-believers and friends.  Maria Teresa had left two instructions:

  1. Her funeral must not be sad and dreary but one of rejoicing for the Lord’s grace and mercy in planning for the salvation of believers who will be forever with Him.  (To be sure, she chose the hymns several years ago!)
  2. That there be no praise of Maria Teresa but all praise and glory to her Lord.

Sons Dave, Dan and Steve, spoke of spiritual truths that Maria Teresa taught and displayed in her life.  Two grand-sons, Luca and Federico, read Psalms.

Bill spoke of two facts.  First, that Maria Teresa had a very special conversion experience, during World War II, without the presence or the witness of other Christians, but only her reaction to reading the Bible for the first time.  Then and there, she gave her life to the Lord and to sharing her faith with others, carried out in her writings and in her ministry in children’s camps, youth camps, university camps, women’s retreats, radio and internet, as well as women’s ministry in the local church.  She believed that no one had to go through intellectual battles or comparing religions to understand the simple gospel.  Her simple message of salvation I repeated to those present.

Many persons had sent letters of memories, one lady who was present and has served the Lord for over 40 years, remembering as a girl sitting by Maria Teresa and praying to accept the Lord, and a man who was saved as a boy, sixty years ago in a children’s camp, gave his testimony of a life of Christian service.  We received many more similar letters.

[image_frame style=”framed_shadow” align=”left” alt=”Maria Teresa” title=”The simple burial plot (to be improved later)
in which we placed Maria Teresa’s body, to await the Lord’s triumphant resurrection call.”]https://corneliusministries.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/08/tomb_MTS-e1377160269395.png[/image_frame]

The second point of Bill’s message was that Maria Teresa believed, taught and modeled the fact that no one has the right to profess to be a Christian, without using their talents and time to the glory of God and the blessing of others.  Many were saying, “What a loss to Italy!”, “Who could take her place?”  But, she believed that all women have gifts to develop and use for the Lord.  So the question posed by her life was simply this: “Will you, man, woman or young person, consecrate your talents to the Lord and begin using them immediately in any way and place that God may show you?  No excuses accepted!”

That was last Sunday.  Today, August 14, Bill spoke in another funeral.

An 18-year Ukrainian came to him some time ago, who said he read the Bible every night and prayed to God, but that he did not really understand what God wanted.  Bill immediately loved him as Christ had loved the rich young ruler, for his youthful enthusiasm, his sincerity, his humility.

Bill took time to explain why we need salvation, and a holy substitute, whom God has given in His Son, dying on the cross and rising again. God is ready to accept and will never cast out anyone who comes to Him sincerely, confessing his sin, believing in Christ as his Savior and desiring to follow and obey Him.  That boy, Victor, said he understood.  He prayed in his own language to say just those things that he had in his heart, to God.  He went away skipping literally.

He was killed in an auto accident the same day that Maria Teresa was called from a hospital room in a small Swiss town, to meet her Lord (I believe that they met Him together).  About 20 of his Ukrainian friends, who used to spend their weekends with him, in drugs and minor criminality, were gathered around the corpse, laid out on a simple metal table in a tiny mortuary room, as I spoke to them, by interpretation from Italian, on John 5:24.  Only God knows if any of them understood, by the conviction of the Holy Spirit, what I said, and if they believed.  Several said they wanted to come to church.

I believe that you were praying for me, and my family, in these past months, as we cared for Maria Teresa and saw her body slowly weaken as she was strengthened to enter that place and that company, that is, as Paul has confirmed, “far better”.  Now, the Lord is preparing me for a month or two of peace and work on texts and projects which Maria Teresa and I had planned over a long period, but were never completed.  I am counting on the Lord bearing me up, and on my friends in Christ bearing me up as well, with their prayers. I will try, as possible, to answer some of the many letters I have received in these past months.  My goal is to continue serving God in Italy as long as He desires.

Bill Standridge,
Rome, Italy

Italy is a Hard Country for Missionaries!

Italy is a wonderful country, filled with interesting people. You might say that Loredana and David are prejudiced toward Italy. We both were brought up there, and speak the language fluently. We know the culture and have served as missionaries in various capacities for many years. There is no doubt that the country is beautiful, the food is great, and the people are very friendly. We love Italy, but we are also very aware of how hard it is to minister there. There is a reason that nine out of ten missionaries who go there leave their ministry within four years. And this is a reluctant decision, after having worked so hard to raise the necessary support and learn the language and the culture.

Ministry in Italy is hard. Over 95% of the Italian population is Roman Catholic. Not every one is very religious, but all are very tied to traditions and cultural strings attached to that belief system. The family holds a strong influence on the beliefs of its members, and many times, even the economical well-being of individuals is tied to their assent to this pervasive religious system. Only half of 1% of the population considers themselves to be Protestant, and many of these would not even  affirm that the Bible is inerrant. There are over 30,000 cities and towns without any kind of Gospel witness. Most times, it takes many years of faithful ministry to begin to see any results.

Serving God is certainly worth the struggle. The Apostle Paul wrote to Timothy, his young companion in ministry, in 2 Timothy 2:10, “Therefore I endure everything for the sake of the elect, that they also may obtain the salvation that is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory.” Dear friends, knowing that God is preparing the hearts of men and women causes us not only to be encouraged, but to desire to go back to Italy as soon as possible.

We are not going alone. Even though we are well aware that ministry there is hard, we know that God is going before us. We are so grateful for Grace Immanuel Bible Church, our sending church, their pastor Jerry Wragg, and the leadership there. In His wonderful goodness, God has also provided a team for us to work with. First of all, we are joining Bill and Maria Teresa Standridge, who have been serving there faithfully for over 60 years. They are not only great examples for us, but also an experienced source of encouragement and advice. We are excited, too, as we plan to go, that we will be working alongside Matt and Johanna Johnston and their two girls. We are going to be able to help them, after they learn the language and culture, to launch a church plant.

We are trusting God to guide us each step of the way. Our goal is to leave for Italy in December of this year. We plan to live in Rome, where Matt and Johanna will be learning the Italian language and culture. During that time, David will continue to serve in the publishing ministry that his parents started over 55 years ago. Because of his mom’s poor health, David is in the process of taking full legal responsibility for the ministry. During that time there will be also opportunities to visit churches in different parts of Italy. Both Loredana and David look forward to the privilege of encouraging missionaries and church leaders who are faithfully ministering in difficult situations. This period of at least one year will also be used to determine, with Matt and our leadership, where God will direct and enable us to plant a church.

A difficult ministry cannot be done without help. God has blessed us with the counsel of a wonderful mission and godly leadership. Cornelius Ministries’ board members have been of great help and encouragement to us. We are grateful for a mission that has a strong biblical position, and for the oversight of our sending church.

We are looking for 100 partners. If you look in Acts, Chapter 10, you will find the story of Cornelius, an Italian centurion, whom God saved in a wonderful way. Our idea is to form our CENTURION CORPS! We are asking God for 100 individuals or families who will commit to pray for us regularly. We know that ministry in Italy will not be easy, but the confidence of regular prayer support by many will certainly be an encouragement to us, for the Lord uses the prayers of His people to make a difference. We will have a special news letter for our CENTURION CORPS, where we will keep you informed of our prayer needs.

We certainly need to raise financial support. By God’s gracious provision, we now have around 60% of our financial need, but we need the full amount before we can make our final plans to leave for Italy. We know that all of our needs will be provided by our sovereign Lord. We know that part our way of determining the right time for us to leave will be by His provision for our financial needs, and we are excitedly waiting upon Him.

Let us know if you are ready to become our partner. If you would like to become part of our CENTURION CORPS, please contact us by letter or email. We are encouraged that we already have a few committed partners. You do not have to support financially to become our prayer partner. For us, that is the most important encouragement we can receive. Praying regularly for someone is hard work! But we would also love to hear from you if the Lord leads you to support our ministry financially, so that we can know how to proceed with our plans.

[colored_box title=”Please Pray:” variation=”red”]

  • We will be faithful in serving here while waiting for our departure
  • God will raise up some prayer partners for our CENTURION CORPS
  • God will provide, in His timing and will, the necessary funds for us to leave in December
  • God will continue to give physical strength to Bill and Maria Teresa Standridge
  • God will provide the support for Matt and Johanna Johnston[/colored_box]

The New Pope

[divider]

[image_frame style=”border” align=”left” alt=”Pope Francesco” title=”Pope Francis”]https://corneliusministries.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/pf.png[/image_frame]

[dropcap4]R[/dropcap4]OME HAS BEEN THE CENTER OF ATTENTION these past weeks, as the Roman Catholic cardinals have elected the new Pope, who has chosen the name, Francis I.  All the world is wondering what this new personage on the world scene may mean.

HE IS OF ITALIAN BACKGROUND, BUT WAS UNTIL his election, the head of the Catholic church in Argentina, where he was born. According to the press, he is known as a humble, caring “pastor”.  He proved himself an avid follower of the Virgin Mary in his first few hours as Pope.  When he was first presented publicly on the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica, he offered a prayer to the Virgin Mary, sent a greeting to the ex-pope, asking that the Virgin Mary comfort him, and announced that the next morning, as his first action as Pope, he would visit and pray in the most important church in the world dedicated to the Virgin Mary, called the Basilica of St. Mary Major.

TWO FACTS ABOUT THE NEW POPE QUICKLY OUTLINED HIS FUTURE:

The fact that he is the first Pope from the “Americas”, reveals a clear line of separation between himself and the Curia, the central administration of the Roman Catholic church, made up of the heads of all the various departments and activities of the church, where the leadership, in spite of the recent non-Italian popes, has been strictly Italian. The Curia, led by priests, bishops and cardinals, has always been considered a secretive, immensely powerful, little-known body. There have always been whispers about its plotting and manipulating the life of the Roman church, often in direct opposition to the Pope’s wishes. But, lately, those whispers have become major thundering public problems.

ONE WAS THE ARREST AND TRIAL OF THE RECENT POPE’S BUTLER,  his most trusted servant. He was accused of stealing secret documents from the Pope’s private apartment, and boxes of them were found in his rooms. No one could believe that he stole them for himself, but that he was paid or pressured by the Pope’s enemies in the Vatican to secure documents to be used against the Pope or against his plans. After the butler’s conviction in a secret Vatican trial, the Pope pardoned him, and the whole matter was hushed up.

AT ABOUT THE SAME TIME, A NEW CHIEF OF SECURITY for the Vatican was appointed. He was an Italian secret police (Italian FBI-type) agent, and immediately it was rumored that the Vatican offices were being equipped with video cameras recording every person who entered or passed through, or visited, the offices. Secondly, hidden microphones were placed in the Vatican, so that no one could talk, or confide in anyone else. without being overheard. Even email messages and other documents were controlled. These were the rumors. What was learned, nobody knows.

THIRDLY, THE POPE (NOW THE FORMER POPE) appointed three Curia long-timers, whom he trusted, but who were not considered to be part of any plots, to prepare a detailed secret report on the Curia’s activities. They were authorized to examine everything and to interrogate anyone. The report was delivered to the Pope for his eyes alone, so no one can say what may be in it. But two theories of rumors travelled through the Vatican and to the press. One talked of top officials who were involved in financial manipulations of the great sums of money that pass through the Vatican, making some very rich. Another rumor spoke of a network of homosexual officials in the Vatican who favored each other in their careers. And the report may have contained much more.

[pullquote1 quotes=”true”]While the new Pope has acquired a reputation in Argentina as being open to ecumenism, the Jesuits have been historically in the forefront of the battle against Protestantism (and evangelicals).[/pullquote1]

NO ONE CAN SAY WHAT, IF ANYTHING, THESE events may have to do with the former Pope’s stress and resignation. But his resignation took everyone apparently by surprise, as it was not considered normal that a Pope resigned no matter how stressed, or even ill, he might be. One thing that the Pope did say was that the secret results of the his investigation would be passed on privately to the new Pope.

SO NOW THERE IS A NEW POPE, COMING FROM the other side of the Atlantic ocean and therefore considered to be an outsider to the problems and plots of the Curia. Could it be a part of his new responsibilities to clean up the Curia, as well as the Vatican bank, called the IOR, which has also been questioned by the Italian government on illegal use of funds?

VERY LITTLE ATTENTION HAS BEEN PAID SO FAR to the fact that the new Pope is a member of the order of the Jesuits, who have often been considered the secret police or army in the service of the Pope, and, of course, he has not explained what that may have to do with his papacy. But it would be naïve and pulling the wool over your own eyes to think that his high position in the Jesuits (even before his papacy) will not develop into a more or less secret program of changes and house-cleaning with far-reaching results. And, while the new Pope has acquired a reputation in Argentina as being open to ecumenism, the Jesuits have been historically in the forefront of the battle against Protestantism (and evangelicals). They were major actors during and after the Reformation, in the service of the Pope.

THINKING OR ACTING AS A JESUIT has become a common way of saying: “That person is crafty or dishonest” and the phrase, “The end justifies the means” (If you have a good purpose or aim in what you do, the means you use do not matter), has often been applied to them. This, in its simplest meaning, would suggest that whatever may be the deep meaning of this man’s election to the papacy, it will certainly be well covered up and difficult to foresee, or even to see clearly, while it is happening!

HIS FIRST STEPS IN THE VATICAN have been hailed as the surprising, unorthodox mistakes of a man ignoring the Vatican’s highly honored treatment of the Pope, always hid behind many barriers of separation from the people. They say he doesn’t use the Pope’s limousine, and that, in Argentina he rode the subway. For the moment, he has decided to not to move into the Pope’s spacious, luxurious apartment in the Vatican, but to continue living in a two-room apartment in “the House of Martha”, a small residence for priests in the Vatican. So he is considered “a man of the people”, but you must consider that this is window-dressing, even if sincere. It has nothing to do with his loyalty to Roman Catholic doctrine.

AT THE VERY LEAST, NO BIBLE-BELIEVING CHRISTIAN
should look forward to positive changes in the Vatican regarding the things which are most important to him. The Roman Catholic church, even through the period of winds of ecumenical propaganda and meetings of the last decades, has never been in any way a friend to Biblical truth regarding its doctrines, traditions or practices. Unfortunately, many Christians have been less than prudent, in taking at face value the flood of well-known words that issue from the Vatican and from the Pope, considering their meaning to be exactly what their own pastor means when he uses those words.

NOTHING COULD BE MORE MISLEADING.

Only by careful study of the many errors and heresies of Catholicism, and the understanding of the definitions that the Catholic church gives to the words it uses, can one know what is really being said. For instance, a Catholic may say sincerely, “We are saved by God’s grace!” How normal that sounds. And how comforting. By “grace” we mean “God’s unmerited favor” which means that man can add nothing to what God has done for his salvation. In Catholic doctrine, being saved by God’s grace means that God has given through a sacrament, like baptism, confession or the mass, his “grace”, the extra push or energy that man needs to have in order to be able to do the works necessary for his salvation.

IN REALITY THE MEANINGS ARE IN COMPLETE, TOTAL CONTRADICTION.

In the evangelical mind, the Gospel is that man is saved by grace alone, In the evangelical mind, the Gospel is that man is saved by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone, with no contribution by him. But in the catholic mind, man is saved by “grace”, dispensed to him by the church, which permits him to do the works which help him merit salvation. Do we need to train more “experts” in Catholic doctrine, as well as in biblical doctrine, so that our churches can be saved from confusion? It may be that a few “experts” are needed, but the major part of leading a congregation to doctrinal clarity, regarding heresies and false doctrines, is merely that its own doctrinal position be patiently, clearly taught, defined, explained from the Bible itself.

MANY TIMES CONGREGATIONS ARE DOCTRINALLY CONFUSED, or naïve and easily misled, only because they have not understood their own doctrine. “Doctrinal” preaching is often considered too technical, too theoretical, too intellectual, too boring for the average congregation. As one person who has worked for years with an evangelistic organization recently said, “We don’t need to talk about doctrine. The center of Christianity is love, and if we talk about love, people will understand and want to become Christians.”

ONLY BY PASSIONATE, JOYFUL, CONVINCING doctrinal teaching and faith in God’s Word as infallible and complete, in Christ’s work for our salvation as infallible and complete, in the Spirit’s convincing and regeneration as infallible and complete, can Christians be fully prepared to face the hurricanes of seduction and error coming against them at every turn, and thus march on triumphantly in faith.

We Don’t Do This in Italy!

The doctor was staring with a puzzled look on his face. Just a few weeks ago, David and his sister, Debbie, were sitting in front of the admission doctor for a facility that does home care for terminal patients and eventually provides hospice, in the last moments of life. After examining all the medical reports for their mother, Maria Teresa, who has served alongside her husband as missionary for over sixty years, he asked what their mom knew of her condition. As they answered that she knew very well that she was terminally ill, he was confused. In Italy, this kind of information is hidden from dying patients, to protect them from falling into depression and giving up.

God gave us the wonderful opportunity to go to Italy again, at the end of February. This was a totally unexpected trip. We were thoroughly immersed in our secular job and ministry at Grace Immanuel Bible Church, and in fact, we were planning the missionary conference in our church and looking forward to participating as future missionaries.

The trip was as unexpected as the phone call we had received a few days before. Mom was in the emergency room and she needed a blood transfusion. This was followed by a week in the hospital and multiple tests. At the end, she was diagnosed with Acute Terminal Leukemia. Although the doctor could not be certain, the prognosis was of only a few months with no available cure. Mom has never been sick. And she is only 88 years old!

[pullquote1 quotes=”true” align=”right” variation=”oliive”]So teach us to number our days that we may get a heart of wisdom.
—Psalm 90:12[/pullquote1]

God provided the plane tickets in a wonderful way, through dear friends. As we arrived in Italy, it was such a blessing to be around Mom and Dad, who are going through this trial with the awareness of God’s amazing grace and peace. The days were filled with times to talk and times of tears, trips to various doctors and meetings with nurses, not to mention planning matters for the future.

On Sunday we had the privilege, as a family, to honor Mom and Dad. One of the amazing blessings was that all four children were able to be there at the same time for a few days. We spent about eight hours that day, rejoicing in the work of God and glorifying Him for the work He has done through Bill and Maria Teresa Standridge, as they ministered together for so many years. We sang, we prayed, we shared from the Scriptures, we laughed and we cried. It was an amazing day, spent being humbled by the grace of God to our family.

What do you do when you know your days are coming to end on earth?  We were blessed to watch Mom’s zeal for the Gospel. As David sat with her in the hospital, as she was receiving her blood transfusion, she was only preoccupied with being sure that she had tracts to give to the nurses. As doctors and nurses came to the house, they all left with surprise. I don’t think they had ever had a similar experience with any other of their terminal patients. The patient knew she was terminal, had peace about that, and was witnessing to them! Mom has been scrambling to finish her projects. Booklets to write, blogs to finish, plus, she wrote a tract to send to the thousands of people who know her all over Italy. She has started a book, as a testimony to God, on how to spend one’s life joyfully serving Him.

The ministry does not plan to end. Dad, although it’s hard to think of ministry without Mom, is planning to continue to serve. David and Bill and Maria Teresa sat down in a meeting to plan the future of the literature and publishing ministry. David will more and more take responsibility, as the plan is continue to reach the 58,000,000 Italians who so desperately need to have the same glorious hope that is accompanying us through these times.

You continue to be vitally important for our ministry. Loredana and David are trusting God to provide the funds for them to continue the ministry that was started by Bill and Maria Teresa. David will work closely with Bill, as he continues to have a vital teaching and writing ministry throughout Italy. Pray for patience and faithful trust in God as we wait upon Him.

May God bless you, as you pray for us. The verse that God has placed on our hearts is Psalm 90:12 “So teach us to number our days that we may get a heart of wisdom”. Life is short! What we do needs to be motivated by eternal values. We need to be wise in the way we plan our days, and the use of our finances and time.

February News from Bill and Maria Teresa

Maria Teresa’s Promotion Day May be Coming Soon

In our January email prayer letter we wrote a paragraph on Maria Teresa’s need to go into the hospital for care on her blood-count, and asked for your prayers. Thanks for so many of you who have written that you were praying and asking for more information.

THE MONTH OF FEBRUARY HAS BEEN FILLED WITH doctor’s visits, blood tests, transfusions and bone marrow tests as her diagnosis and prognosis were formulated and reviewed. Finally, our daughter Debbie, who had come down from Switzerland to help us, and our son Dan, who had come from Milan, Italy, and I were gathered in the doctor’s office in the hospital to hear his conclusion.

HE TOLD US THAT MARIA TERESA HAD A SERIOUS FORM of leukemia, and that life expectation was from two to four months. You can imagine our surprise, consternation and tears at this totally unexpected news. He said that the great danger at this point would be some form of infection passed on to her by family, friends, or crowds. When we returned home, our practice of total truth was put to the test, and we all cried some more, as we prayed together for the Lord’s will to be done. Since that time, we have called the elders of the church to pray with us for healing, if that is God’s will, and received many, many letters from those who are praying.

DO WE EXPECT MIRACULOUS HEALING? YES, WHEN SHE gets to heaven, or sooner, if it is the Lord’s will. But we are living day by day in gratefulness to the Lord for his gift to both of us of long life (she is 88 and I was 86 last week), and of 57 years of united ministry. Our ministry of teaching, writing and publishing has been one of totally shared gifts and blessings, as every sermon outline, article or book I have written has been checked for its Italian by Maria Teresa and every article, book or teaching note she has written has been checked by me for clarity. It is an unusual story of more than half a century of shared burdens and blessings, and of the great joy we have shared in seeing God work. We have seen a growing church firmly planted in Rome, our own sons serving the Lord in Italy, young people and couples going out to serve the Lord from our church in Rome, books, tracts, Bible correspondence courses flowing from our Mission Center, and so much more.

LAST SUNDAY WE HAD A FORETASTE OF HEAVEN as we spent almost the entire day praising God with hymns, Scripture passages and memories of His blessings in our family, together with our four children and their spouses (two of the couples and one grandson who is in seminary, came from the states), and with 4 grandchildren living in Italy (7 other grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren are in the US and were not able to come). Truly it was an unforgettable and unrepeatable day of the Lord’s presence.

YOUR PRAYERS FOR US ARE SO PRECIOUS AS WE FACE these next weeks and months and the Lord leads us through this valley of the shadow of death. Pray for Maria Teresa (so far she has no pain and really has a hard time believing she is not as well as ever) and for me as we try to finish up some of our writing. Pray for me, as I plan to continue my ministry to Italy and to Italians as long as He allows, and however He guides. I will keep you informed as the Lord leads.

TODAY MARIA TERESA IS WRITING A TRACT that will allow her to witness to her peace and joy in facing the passage (on which I preached in December, not imagining how meaningful it would soon be for us) in which Paul sums up his certainty: “absent from the body…present with the Lord”. She is perhaps the best-known woman Christian author in Italy and her books have blessed thousands of women, as well as her articles in the Christian paper we published for fifty years. We hope that we can have the tract published and distributed in the next few weeks.

DEAR FRIENDS, SO MANY OF YOU HAVE STOOD WITH US faithfully for so many years. God has blessed us through you, and, we trust that He has blessed you through us. God alone has kept us going and kept us busy into old age and it was inevitable that He would soon call us home to rest from our labors. We do not believe that He has commissioned doctors to tell us when our work is done, and so we trust Him and continue working as we await His call. It appears that He may still have some work for me to do alone and I will appreciate your prayers about this. When people have remarked on the many years the Lord has permitted us to serve Him, I have often replied, “Yes, He has taught us so much. And, since He has not called us yet, I am convinced that He still thinks there are other things we need to learn.” I certainly have not yet learned all that He can teach me.

In loving, grateful thanks to you and to our Lord,

Bill and Maria Teresa Standridge — Rome, Italy

God Is Opening New Doors!

[dropcap4 variation=”coprper”]W[/dropcap4]e have been so blessed, as we have watched God work in our lives. We are grateful for the ministry that Grace Immanuel Bible Church is having in our lives. The faithful preaching of the Word and the incredible body life are both a challenge and an encouragement for us.

Cornelius Ministries continues to have an impact in Italy through the ministry of Bill and Maria Teresa Standridge and the literature ministry inItaly. We are thankful for thousands of people that are impacted by the books, Bible correspondence courses, tracts, and blogs that daily touch so many lives.

God is giving us many opportunities to serve and have an impact for missions. Loredana is discipling many ladies in the church and poring her love for Christ and for ministry into others. David has the privilege of teaching two Bible studies and speaking into different men’s lives.

[pullquote1 quotes=”true” variation=”mossgreen”]The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.
—Matthew 9:37-38[/pullquote1]
One of the many amazing privileges
has been to meet regularly with a couple from our church who have been challenged by the Lord to consider Italy as their place of full time service. Matt and Johanna have been a source of great encouragement for us. Matt is pastor of student ministries at our church. We have watched their love for Italy grow, as we have met to talk about ministry and have helped them learn Italian.

The elders of our church have asked us to accompany this couple and one of the elders on a survey trip to Italy. God willing we will be leaving October 2nd and return the 16th. Our goal is to expose them to different ministries, but especially to have them see the work of Cornelius Ministries in Italy. This will also give time for David to spend time in Rome and help in the decisions that have to be made for the progress of the literature ministry.

In the last couple of weeks, a new couple from our church has shown interest forItaly. Brian and his wife, Julie, are in the beginning stages of considering Italy as their future ministry. Brian Marchi is in his last year of seminary. We are excited to see how the Lord will guide.

David has been working full time in a company owned by a member of our church and has grown under the challenges of juggling full time work, his responsibilities with Cornelius Ministries, helping with the development of The Expositors Seminary and being faithful in teaching the Bible studies.

God used a message by Todd Murray, one of our pastors, to challenge David to meditate daily through the Psalms. This time of study has developed into David preparing daily devotionals that are being emailed to many. Loredana has begun to translate them in Italian and they are now being emailed to many in Italy, as well.

As you can see, God is faithful to open unexpected doors of ministry. We never thought that God would use our time here in Jupiter to touch lives and encourage others to consider Italy as a mission field. We have a responsibility to serve, not to tell God where and how we want to do it!

We thank those that are praying faithfully for us and supporting our ministry financially. We continue to ask God to clarify for us what He wants us to do and then to give us the strength to do it. We look forward to our trip to Italy, where we will be able to see the ministries we love so much, along with spending some time with our friends with whom we served when we were with Aurora Mission.
